Newsletter 2022

Dear friends,

Comadre Luna Collective continues to take steps with the Latinxs immigrant community in Philadelphia. In this newsletter we would like to share with you what we did in 2022: we held workshops around our Feminist Economies Project; we work on a Reproductive Justice Project; we responded as a collective towards the criminalization of abortion; and we made progress on our Voces de Oro Project that documents and creates awareness about the impact on our communities of gentrification in the Kensington and North Philadelphia neighborhoods.

This 2022 has flown by! Perhaps it is because we have been focused on working on the Voces de Oro project. This project seeks to raise awareness about the rapid and massive gentrification in the Norris Square area of North Philadelphia, and the impact that this gentrification has had on communities of color who have lived in the neighborhood for generations. We aspire to produce a radio soap opera that will tell the story of the neighborhood and the massive displacement due to gentrification; various podcasts with interviews, conversations and resources; a story book that will be of interest to adults and children; video clips of neighborhood walks and stories; and a guide to preserving the neighborhood that includes resources to advocate for the rights of residents.

In 2022 we also developed and delivered workshops on Feminist Economies including information on worker cooperatives, domestic worker rights and business planning. We collaborated with wise and experienced comadres who taught us how to start new businesses and manage our finances.

We held interviews with members of the community on the occasion of Commemoration of Black Descendants Month. A Panel on Free and Safe Abortion with compas in Mexico and Argentina. And we connected with very interesting organizations doing latinxs, immigrant’s and gender justice work such as Familia LGTBQ+, La Puerta Abierta, Juntos, Norris Square Neighborhood Coalition, Riverwards, Mi Gente, Abortion Liberation Found, PhillyCAM, among others.

We also continued producing the podcast La Canasta, which brings resources in Spanish for the immigrant community in Philly and New York, and La Cacerola, where we tell stories about climate change, feminist resistance, and stories of institutional racism.

By 2023 we plan to continue with these projects and resume others such as: Reproductive Justice to ensure the right to abortion. Free pregnancies and safe deliveries; Collective Care to improve our mental health by providing spaces such as women’s circles, yoga and body movement; and to strengthen our networks for parenting and in general to support us collectively in this life as immigrants. Finally we project a great year spreading everything we have prepared for the Voces de Oro project.

Sustaining the development of these projects is only possible with your support. Comadre Luna is a feminist collective in Philadelphia and New York. We are a group of Latina immigrant women, workers, fighters and organizers for women’s liberation.
